Lion's Mane, NGF and BDNF, OH MY!

We LOVE Lion's Mane! Lions Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is a medicinal mushroom with a special polysaccharide that's been shown to promote nerve regeneration, remyelination, and an increase in Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) & Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF.)

Nerve Grown Factor is a protein that plays a major role in the maintenance, survival and regeneration of neurons in both our central and peripheral nervous systems. BDNF is a protein that promotes the survival of nerve cells (neurons) by playing a role in the growth, maturation (differentiation), and maintenance of these cells.

Research has found that Lion's Mane may protect against dementia, reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression and help repair nerve damage. For a deep dive into what's currently known about this amazing fungi check out: Neuronal Health – Can Culinary and Medicinal Mushrooms Help?

For additional research and writing on Lion's Mane and BDNF for both brain and nerve health, see below! The top section contains studies and the bottom section is an archive of the best articles we've come across on the topic. Have fun!
